Well, I mean, as you can see, the top stayed pretty colorful, but I spread a thin layer of white icing on just the top, which concealed all the colors and added some extra sugary goodness to this cake! Not like it really needed it, but you can't make a birthday cake without icing, it's against the basic rules of birthday cake making! Β For this tie-dye beauty, I used the same exact recipe as my tie-dye cupcakes, except I doubled it and baked it in a buttered-and-floured pan for about 40 minutes at 350. Easy peasy! I didn't layer the colors like I did for the cupcakes though, what I did was more of a color-wheel sorta thing, like this...

SHA-ZAM! Pretty cool, huh? This right here was my little brother's birthday cake this year, and I'm pretty sure he thought it was the coolest thing evaaaah. He is so lucky to have a sister who likes to bake like me π Seriously though, I can't get over how cool it looked! And the best part was that once it was baked, it just looked brown and innocuous and plain on the outside, which made it a total surprise once you cut into it!Β

Not too bad, right? P.S., all these bright crazy colors totally tripped my camera out and it made my pictures blurry.. I think it wasn't sure where to focus. But whatever, I think this still looks pretty awesome! This cake is perfect for kids parties, because, well, kids love bright colors... duh! But I think it would also be fun for like a Hippie-themed party, no? Totally groovy. Wanna see the inside?

I was actually kinda disappointed on the inside because it wasn't as cool as the top, but maybe I'm just too high-maintenance. But what's cool is that every slice is different! And it's also really yummy. So, really, I don't know why I'm complaining. π Make this! And while you're at it, also make these little yummies...

Cake pops! I love me some cake pops, and everyone else loves them too, not to mention they're really not as hard as you would think. And keeping in theme with my crazy tie-dye cake, I made the inside...

Blueee! Needless to say, I had some fun with food coloring while making these recipes. Nothing wrong with that, since I usually don't use it. If you wanna make cake pops too, I just used my basic recipe from my triple chocolate cake pops, but used vanilla cake, vanilla frosting, and yellow candy melts. I mixed the food coloring into the cake-crumbs-and-icing mixture, but it might have been easier if I had just mixed it into the icing. Oh well. These were super yummy. Happy baking! π

Wow, fantastic colours, perfect for a birthday party. What type of food colouring did you use to get such vivid colours? Was it paste or drops?

Claire- for the blue and yellow, I used cheap dollar store food coloring... Lol! For the other colors, I had gel. π

That looks so good!I'm gonna make it for my birthday party.Do you think it would taste better (without ruining the color) with milk chocolate chips?I am also a chocolate freak, and personally believe that a birthday cake without chocolate isn't really a birthday cake.
Valentina says
dear anon,
well, I personally thing this would taste great with chocolate chips! I agree with you, a birthday isn't a birthday without chocolate π the way I'm thinking about it, it should work out like with chocolate chip cookies... the chips would melt but stay separate, you know? I would make sure to coat the chips with flour before adding them though, so they don't all sink to the bottom... and use parchment paper in your pan so it doesn't stick! Another idea could be to make a plain cake but make chocolate frosting? I don't know, whatever sounds best to you. Let me know what you pick! π
