Ooooh, you guys. I am so excited about sharing this recipe with you today! Meringata is one of my all-time favorite Italian desserts {and I actually mentioned it in my post about my trip to Italy like 1286438 years ago}, and it's composed of vanilla ice cream, usually in a slice form, crusted with crushed meringues, and covered in a bittersweet chocolate fudge sauce. Swoon. This is basically what dreams are made of. Since I couldn't exactly make ice cream slices for y'all, I decided to turn the dessert into an ice cream sundae sort of a thing. Scoops of vanilla ice cream are covered in meringues, and the whole thing is doused in a generous amount of extra-dark chocolate. I think this might become your new favorite thing.
I will say this though: this turned out to be exponentially messier than I thought it would be. I just figured, ahh you know, roll this scoop of ice cream in meringue crumbs, and they will all stay stuck on perfectly, and then I can daintily set these scoops in bowls and pour a classy amount of fudge on top and it will perfectly drip and look perfect for pictures. Ha. Haha. Haaaa. This ice cream sundae sure showed me, let's put it that way.
Although these are kind of a colossal mess, they are totally worth it! The creamy vanilla ice cream and crunchy meringues complement each other perfectly, and the bitter, dark chocolate ganache on top just seals the deal. If you're a smart individual who doesn't need excessively artsy fartsy pictures, I would recommend using normal sized bowls. Just so your sauce doesn't spread all over the tray you conveniently placed underneath table. Ya know? These treats are an Italian take on the classic hot fudge sundae, but they are nothing short of amazing. Try them, they might just change your life!
