Happy Wednesday, friends! I am so excited to share this recipe with y'all today, because I looove donuts. I've been lusting after a donut pan for what feels like forever, and I finally received one for my birthday so I couldn't wait to get to baking! I decided to start off with a nice, basic recipe. These are dark chocolate donuts, made extra moist and delicious with the addition of sour cream in the batter, and topped with a rich white chocolate glaze and colorful sprinkles! These are incredibly delicious and so simple to whip up. The only thing that could possibly improve them would be ownining like 4 donut pans to make the baking quicker. When you can only bake 6 at a time, it definitely takes longer than you'd like. When donuts are involved, I would like to shove them in my mouth at the nearest possible opportunity, please-and-thank-you.
In case you're in the same situation I was until recently, and don't own a donut pan, don't despair! You can easily just make these as cupcakes. The cute factor won't be quite the same, but they will taste just as delicious. I adore the delicious dark chocolate base, but I have to say the white chocolate glaze is a tasty surprise! It looks like plain white sugar glaze, but it tastes soooo much better. It's seriously the one element that takes these donuts from "good" to "omgiwantlike12". Not kidding. You could just make the cakes and top them with glaze and be done with it, but we all know I have no self-control around sprinkles, so here you go. For me, donuts just aren't donuts if they aren't topped with rainbow sprinkles! I hope next time a craving strikes, you'll decide to make these yummies instead of running to the corner bakery. Happy baking and happy eating!

dark chocolate donuts with white chocolate glaze
Ingredients
- *for the donuts*
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup {1 stick} unsalted butter softened
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ½ cup sour cream
- ½ cup milk
- 1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoon dark cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- *for the glaze*
- 3 oz white chocolate
- ½ cup heavy cream at room temperature
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350F, butter your donut pan and sprinkle with cocoa powder, tapping out the excess. Set aside.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add in the egg, cocoa, and vanilla, and beat well.
- Mix in the sour cream and baking soda.
- Mix in the flour and salt until incorporated, then slowly pour in the milk.
- Fill your donut molds about ⅔ full {I found the best way to fill them is to pour the batter in a large ziploc bag, snip the corner, and pipe it in. Fast and mess-free!}.
- Bake for about 15 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the thickest part of the donut comes out clean.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes in the pan, then turn donuts onto a cooling rack and allow to cool completely.
- When ready to glaze, heat the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 30 second intervals until completely smooth. Slowly whisk in the heavy cream until a smooth, creamy glaze forms.
- Dip the tops of the donuts in the glaze, then top with sprinkles as desired. Glaze will remain sticky and not harden. Enjoy with cold milk! 🙂
