Okay, so these may be nothing new... but they are super delicious and easy! So they totally deserve to be blogged. Is there anything better than pizza? Few things, in my opinion. But these pizzalicious cinnamon-roll spinoffs might just be better than the real thing. If you don't believe me, it's only because you haven't tried them yet!
Imagine this... soft, delicious pizza dough, rolled up with mozzarella, provolone, and parmesan cheese, sprinkled with a little bit of oregano, and baked until golden brown and deliciously crusty. And then, you dunk the whole thing in delicious homemade sauce! Swoon. This is the stuff dreams are made of.
I used store-bought pizza dough for these, so they came together in mere minutes! You can use your favorite store-bought pizza too, or homemade dough, or even the "pizza crust" from a can {I won't tell}. All I know is these are warm and gooey and perfect for a quick lunch or dinner or snack or well... anytime, really. Cheesy perfection!
Here is my homemade pizza dough recipe if you want to make it from scratch!
Cheesy Pizza Pinwheels
Yields: about a dozen pinwheels
for the pinwheels
1 ball store-storebought pizza dough, or 1 can of crescent pizza dough, or enough homemade dough for 1 pizza
4 slices provolone cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
½ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
garlic salt and oregano, as needed
for the sauce
1 8oz can tomato sauce + half a can of water
¼ cup chopped onion
2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
pinch of sugar
pinch of salt
oregano, if desired
Preheat the oven to 425F, and line a baking sheet with parchment or a silicone liner. Set aside. On a lightly floured surface, roll out your pizza dough to a large rectangle. Just be sure your dough doesn't get too thin! Lay out the provolone slices on your dough, and sprinkle the mozzarella and parmesan evenly on top, all the way to the edges. Top with some garlic salt and oregano. Using your hands, carefully roll up the dough, sealing the ends with a little water if needed. Cut slices about 1 ½ inches thick, and lay our onto your prepared baking sheet. Top with additional oregano if desired! Let the rolls rise for 30 minutes, if possible. When ready, bake in your preheated oven for 15-17 minutes. While the pinwheels bake, make the tomato sauce. In a small nonstick pot, heat the olive oil and onions. Cook until the onions are fragrant and start to turn light golden, then add in the can of tomato sauce and the water. Sprinkle some salt and sugar, along with oregano if you want, and stir well. Cover and lower the heat to a simmer, and cook for 15-20 minutes. Serve pinwheels immediately with warm tomato sauce for dipping. Enjoy!
