Now, I know this is a bit different than usual... but this recipe was so delicious I really couldn't resist. I adore shrimp, and the true Italian in me is crazy about pizza, so as soon as I saw this recipe, I wanted to make it. Shrimp pizza is basically the perfect food! Not to mention, I personally don't like very much tomato sauce on my pizza, and this was tomato sauce-free!
This scrumptious dinner is multi-step, and requires a bit of planning ahead to give the pizza dough time to rise, but it's so worth it. You also need a bit of extra time to pan-sear the shrimp, giving them a delicious, crispy crust, but that can easily be done while the dough is getting ready. Even if you aren't a shrimp lover, I'm almost certain this will convert you! Anything tastes better in pizza form, and crispy shrimp pizza is no exception. So, here is the very first Baking Fairy savory recipe. 🙂
crispy shrimp pizza
Ingredients
- *for the dough*
- 1 cup white all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
- 1 packet dry pizza crust yeast
- ¾ cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- *for topping*
- ½ lb peeled deveined shrimp
- about ¼ cup whole wheat pastry flour
- seasoned salt as needed
- ⅙ cup + 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 large garlic cloves
- 1 cup parmesan cheese freshly grated
- 1 ¾ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup mixed greens
Instructions
- Combine water, yeast, honey, and olive oil, mix with a spoon, and let stand for about 15 minutes, until yeast bubbles.
- Add in flours and salt, and mix until it forms a ball, then knead dough for a couple of minutes until mostly smooth.
- Oil a bowl and place the dough inside, cutting an X on top to facilitate leavening. Let the dough rest and rise in a warm place for at least 1-2 hours, until doubled in size or more.
- While the dough is rising, heat a medium nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
- Season shrimp well on both sides with seasoned salt (or salt + pepper), then dredge lightly in whole wheat pastry flour, shaking off the excess.
- Make sure pan is very hot, and add shrimp, cooking it just until a crisp crust forms. Do not cook them completely, as they will finish cooking inside the oven.
- Oil a jelly roll pan, and dump the dough on top, softly spreading and squishing the dough to reach the edges. Dough will be very thin!
- In a small bowl, combine the ⅙ cup of olive oil and the two cloves of garlic, squished through a garlic press.
- Using your hands or a spoon, spread the garlic oil all around the dough, leaving about 1 inch edge around for crust.
- Spread most of the cheeses on the crust, then arrange the shrimp on top, and sprinkle remaining cheese atop the shrimp.
- Bake in a 375F oven for about 15 minutes, until crust is no longer doughy and cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Immediately remove pizza from the oven, and put the mixed greens on top of the pizza. Cut into squares and enjoy immediately, or as soon as your mouth can handle it. 🙂
